Discover What Products to Sell and Make Great Money

How do you discover what products to sell? If you are starting a business for the first time you may be faced with this question. So you have the desire and are committed to it, but what products should you sell (and make great money)? There are many reasons why you may want to start your own business including to supplement your income, learn from experience or just for the fun of it. Regardless of your reasons for starting a business venture you will share one thing in common with other businesses and that is you will be selling a product or a service.

Brainstorming for ideas

If you want to discover what products to sell you must first have a clear mind and tune in to your inner desires. Spend at least 20 minutes or more brainstorming ideas on products that you have a keen interest on selling. You would like to tap into some of your hidden passion and this is the reason why you must not skip this process. Why sell stationery when what you would like most doing is sell baby clothes? Look at your interest, desires and passion. Start from there. Once you have gotten a list of potential products ask yourself the following 3 questions:

  1. What do I like most about this category of product that I intend to sell? (this will tap into your interests and passions)
  2. Why do I want to sell this product? (to learn what motivates you)
  3. Am I willing to do what it takes to make selling this product a success? (this will check your level of perseverance)

Keep on asking yourself the above 3 questions as you go down your list of potential products. If your answer is not a legitimate one such as “I want to sell this product because my friend said I should be selling this” then the product is not the right one for you to be selling at this point.

Why is passion so important?

Understand that if you are not passionate about the product that you are selling how do you expect others to be passionate about it? You need to create passion in whatever it is that you are selling. If you lack passion there are a few things that you can do to change it:

  • List down all the benefits of your product.
  • Strongly believe in what you are selling. The best way to do this is by investing money in your own product. There is great truth in the saying that owners are sellers.
  • Create a “satisfied customer” memory book where you list all your positive feedbacks from your customers. The feedback given can be in written form or oral. Anything that the customer said that lit you up and reminds you of the good thing that you are providing should be included in your memory book.

Being and keeping motivated

As building your business takes both time and effort, you would need to adopt a right attitude and positive mindset. Without those two you will stumble and meet with many never ending pitfalls. Motivation is an important element when choosing a product to sell. If you are not motivated in selling your product even the simplest tasks can take a long time to do! You will keep on procrastinating and avoiding things that needs to be done or are just important.

You can make great money but if you don’t believe in your product you will meet with a lot of challenges and difficulties. If you believe in the product that you are selling it will be easier to stay motivated than the other way around. You can try to be motivated and sell a product that you don’t believe in but its a lot of hard work. Sooner or later it will take a toll on you.

So how do you stay motivated or be motivated if you are already not so? No feeling is permanent. Its just like showering or going to the gym. You can’t just do it once to get the positive effect (clean and health) in your lifetime. Instead, you must keep doing it on a daily basis. The same goes for motivation. You must keep doing the things that keeps you motivated and avoid the ones that don’t. Some of the ways that you can do to stay motivated include:

  • Listen to motivational CDs or videos. You can also sign sign up for an online course on selling. With the internet it doesn’t cost that much these days to obtain useful information and learn new skills.
  • Listen to uplifting songs.
  • Read an inspirational book. Why not learn how other entrepreneurs achieved their success and overcame failures?
  • Write in your journal about your past and current achievements. Your past successes are proof that you have the sound judgment and intelligence to make yet another success!
  • Mixing with positive people. Their positive energy will spill onto you.
  • Encourage others and you will be encouraged yourself.

The following are things you should avoid at all cost as it can generate ill health in the form of low motivation, depressed state and lack luster view in everything:

  • Hanging out with negative people whose main activity of the day is to complain, complain and complain (in that order).
  • Listen to songs that has the power to depress you. Example of songs that has the words: “I am lonely”, “I can’t do anything without you”. Why listen to such moody songs? Believe it or not it has an effect on your emotions.
  • Keep on thinking on the negative things that you customer has said to you.
  • Keep on thinking on the negative things that your customer will say to you if you start selling! (this is worse than bullet point #3 as your thoughts are imaginary ones and may not even happen).
  • Anything you do that keeps you down, saps your energy and depresses you.

Perseverance will make or break you

So now you have discovered what products to sell. You are passionate about your product. And because you believe in what you are selling you have the drive that keeps you motivated all day long. But the last important characteristic that you need to have to make your selling a success is perseverance. Are you willing to go all the way to make selling your product a success or are you just going to take a halfhearted approach?

You may feel passionate about your product now but it may lack a certain quality to give you a boost in the long run. Think of this factor when deciding on a product to sell. Will you persevere or surrender? Will you give up at the first sign of trouble or bravely overcome all obstacles? Will you conquer your emotions or admit defeat?

Final thoughts

Discovering what products to sell may be challenging at first. But if you understand your passion, interests and what motivates you the process will be much easier. So what have you discovered by doing the exercise above? Why not share your comment with us below?
